Before the release of his most recent work, The Crowded Room, Tom Holland made the decision to take a year off from acting. Some people might find the announcement unexpected given that admirers were eager to see the actor take flight following the conclusion of the Spider-Man trilogy. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland is best known for playing Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, in six different movies. Spider-Man has dominated his career for the past five years, despite the fact that he has experimented in voice acting and explored more adult roles in Cherry and The Devil All the Time during that same span.
So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Holland chose to try something new when the MCU's need for his time subsided. The Crowded Room, Holland's most recent post-Spider-Man endeavor, will debut on Apple TV+ on June 9, 2023. In the psychological suspense film based on Daniel Keyes' The Minds of Billy Milligan, Holland co-stars with Amanda Seyfried. He plays Danny Sullivan, a figure modeled off Milligan, the first American to be exonerated of a serious crime via a dissociative identity disorder (DID) diagnosis. The show delves deeply into mental health and the fact that trauma frequently lays at the root of disorders like DID.
Holland is used to the physically taxing aspects of acting, but Sullivan is a more intense part that necessitates him into another person's headspace. He's been upfront about how challenging it was to play Sullivan. Holland felt he couldn't break free from the character even after filming was over because of the strain of having to enter Sullivan's headspace. Holland acknowledged to Entertainment Weekly that he once experienced a "meltdown," and that he had considered shaving his head to further detach Sullivan from his private life. Holland is now looking forward to some downtime, further realizing the toll The Crowded Room took on him.
Why is Tom Holland taking a year off from acting?
Holland revealed in an interview with Extra that he will be taking a year off from acting, partly due to how challenging and time-consuming The Crowded Room was. He had to work harder than usual because he also functioned as the show's producer in addition to putting on a darker version of myself to play the part of Sullivan. Holland said there was a "learning curve of becoming a producer, " which increased the burden on an already challenging profession.
Holland enjoyed his time as a producer, but he had to confess that with The Crowded Room, he had had enough.
I'm used to working hard. I've always believed that effort produces quality results. However, the program did ruin me. There was a moment when I felt like I needed a break and I travelled to Mexico for a week to relax on a beach. This show's difficulty led me to take a year off. I am eager to see the outcome. I believe that our efforts weren't in vain.
Holland deserves a break more than anybody else, given the number of blockbusters he has acted in in addition to The Crowded Room. It also makes sense to put your mental health first after a particularly taxing job. It does, however, raise concerns about his next endeavors. Amy Pascal hinted at the existence of a fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland at the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse premiere. In a forthcoming biopic, the actor will also take on the role of Fred Astaire.
